Paul Douglas Smith, 72, of Chattanooga, Tenn. died peacefully at his home on Monday, August 29, 2016.
Paul was born on December 26, 1943, in Owensville to the late Richard V. and Eunice (Newbound) Smith. On May 31, 1969 at Immaculate Conception Church in Owensville he was united in marriage to Diane Rose Quast. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Charles. He proudly served in the US Navy aboard the USS Saratoga (CVA 60), after which he spent nearly his entire life as a self-employed carpenter. He is best remembered as a very proud husband, father, grandfather, and a selfless provider to family and friends. His strong character and work ethic will continue to resonate through the lives of his children for generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Nancy Nowack, Elizabeth Ann Treece, and Glenda Buhr.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Diane Smith; sons, Patrick Smith and wife, Kathleen, Christopher Smith and wife, Rachel, and Ryan Smith and wife, Jodi; daughter, Marleah Alpers and husband, Josh; by eleven grandchildren; sister, Mary Jane Jett; and brothers, Richard Eugene Smith and Roger Smith.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 3 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Owensville with Fr. Wayne Boyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.
