Herbert James Benton, 83, of Gerald, Mo. passed away on Monday, January 30, 2018, at St. James VA Home.

Herbert was born on February 26, 1934, in Gerald to James Leslie and Martha (Bray) Benton. On May 2, 1955, in Lead, S.D. he was united in marriage to Bernice Lorraine Alleman.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Gerald; had served his country with the United States Army receiving the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, two Over Seas Bars and Good Conduct Medal; served as Gerald fireman, fire chief, and on Gerald-Rosebud fire district board; city of Gerald alderman, mayor and municipal judge; vice-president of Franklin County Municipal League; life member of VFW; member of Gerald Lions Club and served as vice-president; Gerald business man for 20 years; and Gerald Countryside Manor Board member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Martha Benton; brothers, Earl and Leroy Benton; and sisters, Sylvia and Dorothy Mae Benton.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Lorraine Benton of the home; children, Marion Bearden and Mike Hillary of Donovan, Ill. and Herbert James Benton Jr. and wife Abena St. Luce of St. John's, Antiqua; brother, Glenn Benton and wife Wanda of Strain; sister, Ann Seba and husband Clifford of Troy; grandchildren, Michele Brendel and husband Jeffrey of Sullivan, D.J. Eberlin and wife Kimberly of Rosebud and Andrew Benton and Ana Benton both of St. John's, Antiqua; and great-grandchildren, Ty, Abrial and Makayla Brendel and Mallory, Carson and Evan Eberlin.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 6 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Gerald with Pastor Glenn Hollander officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. at the church.
