Vernon M. Rupp, 95, of Mt. Sterling, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 surrounded by his family.
Vernon was born March 20, 1924 and raised in Hermann, Mo. He was an only child born to the late George and Edna (nee Schneider) Rupp. Vernon grew up farming with his dad until he was of age to enlist in the Navy to serve in WWII. After the war, he returned back to Hermann where he met and married Myrtle Drusch Nov. 5, 1950 who preceded him in death. Vernon and Myrtle were blessed with one daughter, Jane and later with their son-in-law Terry Ragan who reside in St. Louis. He also is survived by a niece, Doris Beckman and husband David of Florissant, and a nephew, John Drusch of St. Peters.
He worked for General Motors for 30 years and retired April 1, 1980. Vernon enjoyed his retirement for 40 years, because it took him back to his country roots and allowed him to farm again. Vernon's love for life, family, good friends and country living were the things he treasured most in his life.
Vernon never missed an opportunity to call his dear friends and wish them a Happy Birthday! He also loved playing cards especially pinochle as it was his favorite. Vernon loved life polka music, country music, watching RFD on television, old western movies, church picnics, swapping stories of the good old days and taking a drive down a dusty country road were among his favorite things to do. Vernon was witty, charming, kind, generous, and forgiving. His generation was known as the Greatest Generation and country strong.
Vernon will forever be remembered by all those that knew and loved him dearly. May he rest in peace.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 4 to 8 PM at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 20 at 11:00 AM at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville with Pastor Darrel Deeker officiating. He will be buried at Old Bland Cemetery, Bland, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Old Bland Cemetery.
