Obituary

James Alfons Verhulst, 85, of Owensville, Mo., passed away Wed., Aug. 17, 2022, at his residence in Owensville.

Jim was born, March 15, 1937, to Alfons and Marie (Maddens) Verhulst in Ottumwa, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Marie Derma, September 29, 1962, in Chicago, Ill.

As a young man, Jim farmed in the rural Ottumwa, Iowa, then Prophetstown, Ill. area until 1956, when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was discharged from the air force on July 15, 1959. While visiting Chicago, Jim met Phyllis and married her in September 1962. They moved to St. Louis a few months later for Jim to pursue his career at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft (now Boeing) and start a family. At McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, Jim was an electrical engineer and technical writer for flight manuals. Jim and his wife, Phyllis, were very involved and active in the community to help better the lives of people in Owensville. Jim was a member of VFW, The Lion's Club and president for several years, and a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Owensville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis M. Verhulst; his parents, Alfons and Marie (Maddens) Verhulst; sisters, Bertha DeWitte, Mary Louise DeWitte, and Leona Wambeke; and brothers, Joseph Verhulst, Eugene Verhulst, John Verhulst, and George Verhulst.

His survivors include his daughters, Sandy and husband Jim Dobson of Kirkwood and Bonnie Verhulst of St. Charles; son, Paul and wife Melanie Verhulst of St. Charles; sister, Margaret Behn of Orion, Ill.; brother, Ernie and wife Mary Jo Verhulst of St. Charles; and four grandchildren, Evan Dobson, Kira Dobson, Sami Verhulst, and Andrew Verhulst.

Visitation will be Fri., Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 404 S. 1st Street, Owensville, Mo. 65066.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Celebrant Father Wayne Boyer. He will be buried with full military honors at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cemetery in Owensville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lion's Club or Immaculate Conception Church.
