Obituary

Mary Rita Bock, 86, of Owensville, Mo., passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur, Mo.

Mary was born April 25, 1936, to Elias and Rose (Bothe) Nichols in Ironton, Mo. Mary was the 6th of 7 children. Her parents ran the local hotel and Mary and her sisters went to Ursuline Academy, an all-girls Catholic school in Arcadia, Mo.

After high school graduation, Mary moved to St. Louis and worked for Southwestern Bell as a secretary.

She was united in marriage to Eldon (Bud) Bock on May 27, 1961, in St. Louis. They celebrated 47 years of marriage and were blessed with three children, Ben, Joe and Patty.

Mary enjoyed being a mom and home-maker on the farm in Bland. She also worked with Bud, as a manager and bookkeeper at their rental business in Owensville.
Over the years, Mary was active in bowling and golf, but most know her for her quilts, afghans and other handmade items. Mary made numerous lap robes that she donated to the Missouri Veteran’s Home residents.

Mary was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Lady's Sodality, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Owensville Garden Club and several quilting groups.

Mary was always friendly and made it her goal to bring a smile to others. Whether it be dressing in costume for events at the Owensville Senior Center or giving candy to little children at church, she enjoyed being around others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bud; a sister, Rosemary Nichols; brothers, Nick, Paul, and Tom Nichols; sisters-in-law, Verna Breece, Elenora Hart (Bill), and Carol Nichols; and brothers-in-law, Dick Holmes and Elwood Aytes.

Mary is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Winn (Edwin) of Austin, Texas, Anne Holmes of Pilot Knob; sister-in-law, Rosella Aytes of Cuba; her sons, Ben Bock (Ronda Calkins) of Rosebud, and Joe Bock (Terri Herring) of Canton, Miss.; daughter, Patty Poad (Mark) of Bellevue, Wash.; grandchildren, Shannon (Michelle), Nathan (Nora), Heather (Jesse), Adam, Alex (Jessica), Amelia, and Cameron; several great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Gottenstroeter Chapel in Owensville.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Owensville with Father Wayne Boyer officiating. Burial will be at Leduc Methodist Cemetery at Bland.
